Over-the-counter insoles offer the perfect "middle way" for runners: They provide more support for your foot than the sockliners that come in running shoes, yet they're way less expensive than custom orthotics. "Insoles help protect the foot, which can help prevent a lot of injury problems," says Doug Stewart, Ph.D., a California biomechanist. Stewart and Richard Braver, D.P.M., a New Jersey sports podiatrist, tested dozens of insoles on the runners they see. These four fared best.
1. Archmolds Athletic Style $33
These heat-moldable insoles will better customize to your foot after placing them in the oven for two minutes. Bonus feature: An antibacterial treatment that fights odor.

2. Shock Doctor Arch Adjust $40
The movable arch disk provides multiple levels of support for different arch types. However, our experts recommend placing the thickest tab in the spot nearest your heel.

3. Sof Sole Stable Trac $30

4. Sole DK $50
