THE PERFECT RUNNING GLOVES

Lesley Suppes, our Gear Gal, gives you the tips and tricks you need to keep your hands warm during you next winter run.

PUBLISHED 01/15/2008

Q: What's the perfect pair of gloves to prevent my hands from going numb during cold-weather runs?

A: You may not need the perfect glove--you may need a layering system. Two pairs of gloves, and maybe even a warming lotion, offer the most options to combat the weather. Start with Ibex's stretch wool Glove Liner ($25, ibexwear.com), which wicks sweat and retains warmth no matter how damp it gets, and doesn't have bulky seams, making it a perfect base layer. Next, use a midweight layer, such as Brooks's new Wanganui Shelter Glove ($40, brooksrunning.com), which is warm, waterproof, and precurved for ample finger dexterity. Asics also has a midweight Winter Run Mitt ($30; asicsrunning.com) that will allow your fingers to share their ambient heat. If your hands are still icy, try applying a warming lotion, like WarmSkin (warmskin.net), and wearing a pair of plastic gloves (think bakery or hair coloring) underneath your other layers.
