Nutrition for Runners

MADE TO ORDER

Get the bar you really want.

By Kate Cline

PUBLISHED 07/16/2008

What: An energy bar custom-made to your exact specifications

Who For: Picky eaters, allergy sufferers, and runners who like choices

Why: Anthony Flynn and his mom, Ava Bise, love energy bars but hate the artificial ingredients and high-fructose corn syrup many of them contain. So they started baking bars at home. Friends tried them, and demanded their own--with tweaks. "They'd say, 'Now I really want to have some with goji berries,'" says Flynn, 24. In 2006, the mother-son team launched youbars.com.

How: Following a nine-step process on the Web site, pick your bar's protein source, grains, and add-ons, such as nuts, seeds, and berries. We liked bars with dates, cashew butter, and, of course, chocolate chips. ($30 to $40 for 12 bars)
